Vesperlight
The Ostrel Isles, 412 AF
Four hundred years ago a star fell into the Ostrel Isles and shattered. Its glowing cindrels power all magic, keep the lighthouses lit and hold back the Sallowkin, the drowned things that rise from deep water at night. But cindrels drink the sun, and the sun wanders on an eighty-year cycle. The Vespertide is coming: years of short days and nights so long that the cindrels fade before dawn.
About forty islands sit in a cold, storm-heavy sea. Fishing villages cluster around their lighthouses, ships sail only by day, a family's wealth is counted in cindrels, and children learn never to whistle at the sea after dark.
The calendar counts the years After the Fall (AF). It is 412 AF. The next Vespertide begins in 415, and the first eclipse, its herald, is ninety days away.
Keep the lights burning.
